Since 1893
Described as the most beautiful voyage in the world, the Norwegian Coastal Voyage sails deep into the heart of a breathtaking landscape, into fjords, inlets and ports that larger ships cannot reach.
The Real Norway
A Hurtigruten cruise is the ideal way to experience the real Norway. Your ship sails along the beautiful Norwegian coastline, deep into the heart of this breathtaking landscape. These working ships voyage into fjords, inlets and ports that other, larger ships cannot reach. Observe the Midnight Sun of summer and the ever changing seasons that set the rhythm of life for local people. There is no better way to enjoy the truly Norwegian way of life than on one of Hurtigruten's Norwegian Coastal Voyages.
The Norwegian coastline has been the home of Hurtigruten since its founder, Captain Richard With, forged a route between Trondheim and Hammerfest back in 1893. Ever since, the ships have provided an essential service between the cities, towns and communities of the coast, ferrying local passengers, goods and travellers. With more than 130 years of nautical know how behind it, Hurtigruten offers a cruise experience beyond the bounds of conventional cruising, with the chance to encounter the habitats, wildlife and local people of Europe's far north. You can read the full story on our History of Hurtigruten page.
A Voyage for Every Season
Hurtigruten's voyages are characterised by the seasons. In spring, Norway's shores are once again warmed by the returning sunlight, reinvigorating life along the coastline as the sun soars higher each day and works to warm the frozen land. As spring leads into summer, the Land of the Midnight Sun turns night to day, the extended sunlight illuminating the landscape around the clock while you sail above the Arctic Circle, making every night a joy to behold.
As summer fades into autumn, watch the coastline transform from one season to another, with clean air and hues of red and yellow covering the mountains, hills and forests. A winter voyage along the coast of Norway is a refreshing experience, a snow covered landscape and air that is clean, fresh and crisp; a mesmerising winter wonderland with, hopefully, the spectacular Northern Lights overhead. Winter departures of 11 days or more carry Hurtigruten's Northern Lights Promise, a free voyage the following winter if the aurora fails to appear, and dedicated Astronomy Voyages sail with expert lecturers on board. Our Climate and Seasons page covers what to expect month by month.

Choosing a Voyage
The Original voyages on the Coastal Express offer 12, 7 and 6 day options. The 12 day Classic Round Voyage, from the cultural centre of Bergen to Kirkenes and back again, is the ultimate journey; the ports visited by night on the northbound cruise are revealed in daylight on the southbound journey. The 7 day northbound and 6 day southbound voyages cover one direction each, and in the larger towns and cities you will have plenty of time to go ashore or join one of the many excursions.
For a smaller ship, all inclusive experience over the same coastline, the Signature voyages sail seasonally: the North Cape Line from Oslo between September and April, squarely in Northern Lights season, and the Svalbard Line north to Spitsbergen in summer.
Hurtigruten's former expedition arm now sails as HX, whose ships explore some of the world's least visited shores, including Greenland and Antarctica. You can download the 2026/27 HX Antarctic Expeditions brochure or call us to talk through the options.
