Bergen is where the Coastal Express begins, and it deserves more than a taxi ride to the quay. Add a night or two either side of your voyage, with a hotel in the centre and a day out into the fjords.
The Gateway to the Fjords
Founded in 1070 and ringed by seven mountains, Bergen spent four centuries as one of the great harbours of the Hanseatic League, and the evidence is still standing on the quayside. It is a small city, walkable end to end, and it packs a lot in: a working fish market, a funicular, galleries and concert halls, and some of the best fish restaurants in Norway.
Most people arrive on the day they sail and see almost none of it. An extra night either side is the cheapest upgrade you can make to a Hurtigruten holiday. All our Bergen hotels include breakfast and sit within easy walking distance of the centre, which leaves your evenings free for the restaurants.
What to See
Please note that the Hanseatic Museum's own building, Finnegården on Bryggen, has been closed for restoration since 2018 and is not due to reopen until 2027. In the meantime the museum's exhibitions and its guided tours of Bryggen run from Schøtstuene, a few minutes away on Øvregaten, and are well worth the walk.

On Ole Bulls plass beside the Byparken, overlooking the city park and a few minutes from Torgallmenningen and the fish market. The grandest of the group, with restaurants, bars and an indoor pool, sauna and steam room. Formerly the Radisson Blu Hotel Norge.
A nineteenth century waterfront warehouse that only became a hotel in 1987, its red facade looking straight across Vågen at Bryggen, the Rosenkrantz Tower and the fish market. The harbour view rooms are the reason to book it.
A couple of minutes from Torgallmenningen and a short walk from Bryggen, known for one of the largest collections of modern art in Bergen and for taking its food seriously. A restaurant, bar and gym, and an easy base for the centre on foot.

A half day on the water without leaving the city behind for long. The boat casts off from the centre of Bergen, giving you Bryggen from the angle the Hanseatic traders would have known it, then runs up the Osterfjord towards Modalen, the second smallest municipality in Norway. The walls close in as you go, and the crew take the boat through the narrow, shallow Mostraumen strait where the tide runs hard. The skipper will nose in close enough to a waterfall that you may feel the spray. Watch the shoreline for seals on the rocks and eagles overhead.

Dinner that begins with a boat trip. Cornelius sits on its own small island out among the skerries west of Bergen, with the fjord, the mountains and the passing shipping for a view, and a reputation as one of the best seafood restaurants in the country. The kitchen builds what it calls a meteorological menu around the weather and whatever the boats have landed that day, so no two dinners are quite alike. Easy going, and a memorable way to spend an evening before you sail.

Your unforgettable day begins with a scenic rail journey from Bergen or Oslo to Myrdal, a mountain station 867 metres above sea level. From here, board the iconic Flåm Railway, one of the world's most spectacular train journeys. As the vintage train descends through the dramatic Flåm Valley, you'll pass waterfalls, rivers and remote mountain farms before stopping briefly at the magnificent Kjosfossen Waterfall for photographs. In Flåm, there is time to visit the Flåm Railway Museum before continuing with a two-hour cruise through Aurlandsfjord and the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, where towering mountains create some of Norway's most breathtaking scenery. Disembark at Gudvangen for a coach journey through the beautiful Nærøydalen Valley to Voss, where you'll board the train back to Bergen or Oslo, completing the unforgettable Norway in a Nutshell experience.

The same mountain railway, and then a great deal more fjord. The Sognefjord is the longest and deepest in Norway, running better than 200 kilometres inland to the foot of the Jotunheimen mountains, and this trip gives you hours on it rather than minutes. The day runs by train to Myrdal, down the Flåm Railway with its stop at Kjosfossen, and there is free entry to the Flåm Railway Museum before you board for a long cruise through Flåm and Balestrand. Also available Bergen to Oslo and the reverse.
The Mostraumen fjord cruise is offered on Signature voyages; the other three are offered on the Original Coastal Express voyages. All are graded easy and suitable for most people.
