*Please note that if the date you make your booking is less than 90 days before your chosen departure date, your voyage will start on Day 2 in Oslo.
Day 1 - Oslo* :
Welcome to Norway! Your first destination is the thriving capital, Oslo. After your complimentary flight from the UK, you'll be transferred from the airport to your centrally located hotel. The remainder of the day or evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure.
Oslo, a cosmopolitan city, has an array of attractions that are worth exploring. Consider heading to the city center, where you can capture photos of notable landmarks like the distinctively designed Rådhuset town hall, the Royal Palace, and Oslo Cathedral.
Strolling along the waterfront, you'll discover Aker Brygge, a popular area with a variety of dining options, as well as the impressive Akershus Fortress and the gleaming modern buildings of Bjørvika waterfront. Here, you'll find contemporary attractions such as the Oslo Opera House and the landmark new Edvard Munch Museum. The museum boasts the world's largest collection of works by the iconic Norwegian artist.
If there's still daylight remaining, you may even want to hop on the metro from Central Station. A quick 20-minute ride will transport you to the edge of a serene alpine forest that offers panoramic views overlooking the city.
Day 2 - Oslo* : Discovering Norway's capital
After breakfast at your hotel, we'll go on a tour of two of Oslo's main attractions. Vigeland Sculpture Park is located at the centre of splendid Frogner Park. There, you'll find more than 200 visually striking sculptures in bronze, granite, and cast iron by prolific Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland.
Further north from Vigeland, just outside of Oslo, is Holmenkollen Ski Jump. You won't be doing any jumping yourself, but the impressive building enjoys panoramic views over the city, lakes, and fjord. Beneath the ski jump is also the world's oldest ski museum featuring 2,500 pairs of skis and 4,000 years of skiing history.
The tour will end at the pier where your ship, MS Trollfjord, is waiting to depart by early evening. Once we've welcomed you aboard and you've settled into your cabin or suite, you'll meet your Coastal Experience Team. You'll get to know each member of the team well as they give lectures and organise onboard activities for you throughout your voyage.
Meet your fellow guests in the ship's two-storey panorama lounge and mark the moment we make history by sailing from Oslo for the first time. Watch as the capital's twinkling lights fade into the distance and admire the scenery and various points of interests seen along Oslofjord.
Day 3 - Kristiansand and Farsund : The city of lighthouses
Sitting along the southern tip of the country, Kristiansand is Norway's fifth largest city, with a population of 112,000 people. We aim to be alongside in the early morning, giving you a few hours to explore.
As you enjoy a guided walk, you might notice that the city is built on a very uniform grid plan, with several straight roads running from the harbour all the way through the city. Along these roads, you'll find architecture from different eras, speaking to the extensive rebuilds the city had to go through after major fires in the 18th and 19th centuries, and even a World War II attack.
On an optional excursion that starts from Kristiansand, you'll be able to visit the working Lindesnes Lighthouse, which marks Norway's southernmost point. See the beacon that has been guiding seafarers to safety on dark nights since the early 20th century, and learn about the long history of the site that goes all the way back to 1656.
In the late afternoon, we'll continue to Farsund. There, you'll get the chance to hike the sandy beaches of Lista and see Lista Lighthouse. This is where guests who went to Lindesnes Lighthouse will also catch up with the ship.
It may also be possible to visit a German fortress in Farsund. This fortress was used in World War II and is remarkably well-preserved with many of the original barracks still intact. Learn all about the war history of the area on a guided tour of this historic site, before rejoining the ship in the evening.
Optional Excursions :
How do Norwegians celebrate Christmas? This tour will answer that question, and many more you might have about Norwegian culture and local traditions.
Step into the past as you learn about southern Norway's WWII history on a tour of Kristiansand's historical sites.
Join the Port Guard or a local guide to learn about the history of Farsund, and enjoy great views of the town from Varbak Hill.
Day 4 - Haugesund and Hardangerfjord : Viking history
As we sail past the southern tip of Norway, we'll begin heading north along the west coast. Just past Stavanger, we'll reach Haugesund, the 'Home of the Viking Kings'.
The nickname is inspired by sites such as St. Olav's Church, built in 1250 by King Håkon Hå. There's also Haraldshaugen, a national monument reputed to be the first king's burial site. Why not step back in time to the Viking Age at Nordvegen Visiting Centre which features exhibitions presented by a fictional Harald Fairhair himself.
After a short stay in Haugesund, you'll rejoin the ship for some scenic cruising in Hardangerfjord. At 179 kilometres in length, it is the second longest fjord in the country, and fifth longest in the world.
The stunning waterway is one of Norway's finest. See mountain scenery everywhere you look, with the white peaks that tower over the fjord being reflected in the shimmering water below.
The region is famous for its apple products, from jams and juice to its award-winning cider, which one food writer described as 'Nordic Champagne'.
Weather permitting, we may be able to dock at Rosendal or one of the other picturesque settlements that cling to the shores by the fjord. A small, charming village, Rosendal's main highlight is the 16th century Barony, a manor famous for its beautiful rose garden and landscaped grounds.
Optional excursions :
Immerse yourself in the rich Viking heritage and coastal culture of Avaldsnes, Norway's oldest royal seat.
Let the e-bike take the strain as you roll through the beautiful nature and rich history of the homeland of the Viking kings.
Glassblowing, architecture and Marilyn Monroe – there's more to this art walk through picturesque Haugesund than you might expect!
Day 5 - Ålesund : A picturesque town
After a hearty breakfast on the ship, we'll dock mid-morning at a town that spreads out across a string of islands. With almost an entire day to explore, you'll have plenty of time to see all that Ålesund has to offer.
As we approach the shore, you might first notice the distinctive style of architecture. Every detail of the buildings, from the bright colours to the rounded spires, were all inspired by the Art Nouveau style, which was popular in the early 1900s. Almost the entire town received a makeover in the style when it was rebuilt after a major fire in 1904.
As you leave the waterfront, you'll find yourself in a fairy-tale town, wandering narrow streets lined with unique houses. If your camera's memory card isn't already full after this, you can get impressive photos of the archipelago from the nearby Mount Aksla viewpoint. The 418 steps leading there might look intimidating, but the views are well worth the effort.
You can also visit the Atlantic Sea Park, Norway's first marine science centre. This is one of Northern Europe's largest saltwater aquariums, providing a home to seals, otters, and crabs, as well as many other kinds of marine life. You can even see Humboldt Penguins here, a species otherwise absent north of the equator.
Optional excursions :
Take an exclusive tour of the Hurtigruten Museum, home to our full-sized retired ship, in our birthplace of Stokmarknes.
Experience breathtaking views, quaint fishing villages and rich coastal heritage on a bus tour of the Vesterålen archipelago.
Go wildlife spotting around the Vesterålen archipelago aboard a RIB boat and admire the beautiful islands.
Day 6 - Tromsø, Gateway to the Arctic :
Tromsø, located in Northern Norway, is a vibrant urban hub in the Arctic region, renowned for its remarkable architecture, trendy restaurants, and the world's northernmost university. This city, steeped in polar history, serves as an ideal stopover before venturing further north into the High Arctic.
Despite its humble beginnings, Tromsø boasts a rich heritage that can be traced back to the Ice Age, with archaeological discoveries in the vicinity dating back to that era. In 1794, it was officially designated as a kjøpstad, or "market town," even though it was home to only 80 individuals. In the mid-1800s, Tromsø rose in prominence as a centre for Arctic hunting, evolving into a thriving Arctic trade hub by the late 19th century.
Upon our morning arrival, you will have an entire day to explore this historically significant Arctic city and its enchanting surroundings. Numerous optional excursions await, allowing you to delve deeper into Tromsø's culture and polar heritage. Embark on a captivating city walk to gain insights into Tromsø's past, or venture to the Polaria centre to witness the graceful seals. This remarkable facility, one of the world's northernmost aquariums, offers an up-close encounter with various Arctic marine species.
You may also have the opportunity to visit the striking Arctic Cathedral, featuring a magnificent, expansive stained-glass window that dazzles with its multicoloured hues. Alternatively, you can ascend Storsteinen Mountain, which towers above Tromsø, by taking the Fjellheisen Cable Car. From its summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city, mountains, and fjords, an experience of exceptional beauty.
In Tromsø, the fusion of modernity and a profound Arctic legacy creates a truly captivating atmosphere, inviting you to immerse yourself in its unique charm and awe-inspiring surroundings.
Optional excursions :
Celebrate Northern history, tradition and culture as you travel through time to the Viking age at Tønsviking Medieval homestead.
Explore the remarkable polar heritage, modern culture, and extraordinary panoramic views of Tromsø, 'Paris of the North', in summer.
Take a stroll through the fascinating history and heritage of Tromsø and discover why it's known as the 'Gateway to the Arctic'.
Day 7 - Honningsvåg and the North Cape :
Around mid-morning, our journey brings us to Honningsvåg, the northernmost city in mainland Norway. Despite being relatively young, having gained city status only in 1996, Honningsvåg retains its charm as one of Norway's smallest cities.
Here in Honningsvåg, you have a range of optional excursions to choose from. You can try your hand at king crab fishing, immerse yourself in the culture of the indigenous Sámi people by visiting a local family, indulge in bird watching activities, or take a guided tour to gain insight into life at the remarkable latitude of 71°N.
Honningsvåg also serves as the gateway to the renowned North Cape, famously referred to as the "northernmost point of Europe." Rising 307 meters above the sea, this majestic plateau is located just over 1,000 miles south of the geographical North Pole. Take a moment to absorb the breathtaking views as you stand atop the towering cliffs, witnessing the waves crashing against the rocks below.
Perched proudly on one of these cliffs is an iconic globe monument, inviting visitors to capture a memorable selfie. After securing your selfie, a visit to North Cape Hall is highly recommended. Here, you'll find a range of exhibits and a short film that delves into the history of this remarkable cape.
As we set sail from Honningsvåg, we'll be treated to dramatic vistas of the plateau from the sea. The ship will venture further into the vast expanse of the Barents Sea, leaving the coastline of mainland Norway far behind us, as we embark on the next leg of our unforgettable journey.
Optional excursions :
From iconic views at the North Cape to fascinating local artwork and delicious king crab, join us as we experience the highlights of Honningsvåg.
Drive your own quad bike on a thrilling adventure to continental Europe's northernmost point.
Immerse yourself in the majestic natural beauty of Gjesværstappan nature reserve and encounter the rich diversity of bird life at 71 degrees north.
Day 8 - At sea around Bjørnøya : Between Norway and Svalbard
As we continue our voyage, we reach Bjørnøya, the southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, situated beyond the halfway point between mainland Norway and Spitsbergen. Although we'll only view this inaccessible land from the ship in the afternoon, consider it the prelude to your Svalbard adventure.
Upon catching sight of the island, you may notice its striking lack of trees and even bushes. Bjørnøya is characterized by sparse vegetation, with the land mainly covered by a layer of moss and lichen. However, the abundant bird life that nests on the sea cliffs serves as a vital source of fertilization for the few plants that do grow here. Get ready with your camera to capture captivating moments of Little Auks, Puffins, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Northern Fulmars, and other seabird species soaring over dramatic cliff tops and steep slopes.
Despite its name, which translates to "Bear Island," the only native mammals found here are Arctic foxes. The island was named after a polar bear sighting in the nearby waters, although encountering a polar bear this far south is highly unlikely.
While aboard the ship, take advantage of the opportunity to learn about Bjørnøya's history through polar history lectures. Discover the fascinating tales of the historic expeditions that led to its discovery and the subsequent claims made by various countries over the island. Gain insight into the strategic significance of this remote sanctuary and the role it played during World War II.
Continuing our journey from Bjørnøya, make use of the MS Trollfjord's onboard facilities to relax, such as the sauna or fitness room. Additionally, there will be a photography workshop today, helping you sharpen your camera skills and focus your lens to capture the abundant wildlife and untouched wilderness that await us in Svalbard.

Day 9 - Longyearbyen : At the edge of the world
Today marks our arrival at the mesmerizing Svalbard archipelago, specifically the largest of the three main islands, Spitsbergen. As we venture forth, be prepared to witness a sight to behold—magnificent brown and green mountains gracefully ascend from the High Arctic tundra, while streams of snow-melt trickle through the valley plains, shimmering under the gentle caress of the summer sun.
Take a moment to embrace this very moment in Svalbard, where you find yourself at a latitude exceeding 78°N and just 820 miles (1,500 kilometres) from the North Pole itself. The air in this Arctic desert is fresh and pure, and thanks to the warm northern branch of the Gulf Stream, summer temperatures typically range from zero to eight degrees Celsius.
Our journey leads us to the picturesque settlement of Longyearbyen, nestled along the banks of a sweeping, expansive fjord. As the largest settlement in Svalbard, it proudly holds the title of the world's northernmost inhabited place with a population surpassing 1,000.
Originally established as a coal mining colony in 1906, Longyearbyen now serves as a hub for adventure seekers, scientists, and engineers engaged in various local research projects, including the renowned Global Seed Vault.
Take some time to explore the town at your leisure, savouring the collection of galleries, pubs, restaurants, and even a local brewery. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the notable North Pole Expedition Museum, where you can delve into the fascinating history of polar exploration.
Moreover, you'll have an array of optional excursions to choose from, allowing you to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring landscapes that envelop Longyearbyen. Ever dreamed of dog sledding without the presence of snow? This is your chance to experience this thrilling activity firsthand.
Embrace the enchantment of Svalbard and let its extraordinary charm captivate your senses as we embark on this unforgettable journey.
Optional excursions :
Experience the instinctive connection between human and dog as eight huskies pull you across the Norwegian summer landscape on a wheeled sled.
Meet huskies and hear exciting experiences from mushers at Camp Barentz, before taking a trip through time at the Svalbard Museum.
Day 10 - Ny-Ålesund : Science on the Arctic frontier
As we set sail from Longyearbyen, make sure to rise early to witness the breathtaking vistas of Kongsfjord, one of the largest fjords in the region. Its entrance is guarded by two colossal glaciers that emit resonating creaks as they periodically release ice into the fjord.
This stretch of our journey is an opportune moment to keep a keen eye out for walruses basking along the shores and a variety of migrating bird species, including puffins, king eiders, pink-footed geese, and guillemots. On land, you may catch glimpses of Arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeer, while the pristine waters have occasionally graced us with the presence of white beluga whales. If luck is on our side, we might even spot a polar bear stealthily prowling the coastline in search of bearded and ringed seals.
At the tip of the Brøgger Peninsula, nestled on one of Kongsfjord's shores, lies Ny-Ålesund. Similar to Longyearbyen, this settlement had its origins as a coal mining town but has since evolved into a hub for scientific research stations since the mid-20th century. During the summer months, more than a hundred researchers from over 10 countries and 20 glaciology and climate institutes call this place home.
Take a leisurely stroll around Ny-Ålesund, proudly regarded as one of the northernmost settlements in the world. Visit the local museum and souvenir shop, or seize the opportunity to send a postcard from the small post office, allowing your friends and family to receive greetings from this remote corner of the globe.
For those eager to delve deeper into the town's history, a guided tour of the Amundsen monument is highly recommended. Erected in honour of the legendary Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, this monument commemorates his ground breaking flight to the North Pole in 1926. Amundsen piloted the airship Norge from Ny-Ålesund and successfully touched down in Alaska three days later, accomplishing this feat by way of the North Pole.
Immerse yourself in the wonders of Kongsfjord, Ny-Ålesund, and the surrounding Arctic landscape, as we continue our remarkable expedition through this captivating region.
Day 11 - At sea : Leaving Svalbard
Regrettably, it is time to bid farewell to the captivating landscapes of Svalbard and Spitsbergen. As we set sail southward, back to mainland Norway, there is a possibility of a detour to Recherchefjord, a small fjord located south of Bellsund, if time permits.
Onboard the ship, take this day as an opportunity to unwind and recharge. If the skies are clear, bask in the warmth of the summer sun on deck while keeping a watchful eye for the enchanting presence of whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Alternatively, indulge in a soothing steam session at the sauna, offering a moment of relaxation and tranquillity.
For intriguing insights into local history and wildlife, don't miss the enlightening lectures delivered by the Coastal Experience Team. They may also provide a photography workshop, assisting you in honing your skills to capture breathtaking shots in the days to come.
Delight in the culinary offerings onboard, courtesy of our Norway's Coastal Kitchen concept. Indulge in sumptuous food and beverages featuring the finest and most flavoursome local Norwegian produce. As an added treat, there may be tastings of regional delicacies or captivating demonstrations by our skilled onboard chefs in the show kitchen.
Whether you choose to curl up with a good book in the lounge or engage in lively conversations with newfound friends in the bar, take this opportunity to reminisce and share your favourite moments from the voyage thus far.
Embrace the remaining time onboard, savouring the comforts and camaraderie that have enriched our journey, as we make our way back towards mainland Norway.
Day 12 - Tromsø and Senja ; Exploring 'Little Norway'
We have returned to mainland Norway, and our first destination of the day is Tromsø. Here, the ship will unload any cargo from Svalbard and take on new cargo bound for ports further south.
Returning to Tromsø after our expedition to Svalbard follows in the footsteps of history. Many explorers and sailors, upon completing their Arctic adventures, would converge upon this city. They found the fashion and culinary offerings to be remarkably stylish and refined, especially in comparison to the rugged frontier towns they had encountered. In fact, they affectionately dubbed Tromsø as 'the Paris of the North'.
Our journey continues southward towards Senja, one of Norway's largest islands and a rapidly emerging destination in northern Norway. It comes as no surprise that Senja has been recognized among CNN's top ten most beautiful islands in the world. Proudly referred to as a 'mini Norway' by locals, Senja showcases a remarkable concentration of landscapes that draw inspiration from different parts of the Norwegian coast. To fully immerse yourself in the enchantment of this fairytale island, we recommend disembarking in Tromsø and participating in one of our optional excursions.
Embrace the opportunity to explore the captivating beauty of Senja, a destination that promises to leave you spellbound with its scenic wonders reminiscent of various corners of Norway's picturesque coastline.
Optional excursions :
Embark on an exciting safari of the waters of Senja, passing lush islands and islets while looking out for seals and seabirds.
Hop on an electric bike to explore the idyllic island of Senja with ease. Enjoy breathtaking fjord views during one of Norway's most stunning seasons.
Prepare to be amazed by northern Norway. This scenic bus tour takes in fjords, rugged mountains, sandy beaches, and pretty villages.
Day 13 - Svolvær : Fall in love with Lofoten
Today is dedicated to exploring the breathtaking Lofoten archipelago, renowned as one of Norway's most awe-inspiring regions. As you witness the rugged emerald cliffs emerge dramatically from the ocean, soaring skyward like colossal teeth, you'll quickly understand why this area is celebrated for its spectacular beauty.
Charming fishing villages appear as clusters of red-roofed houses perched on stilts, delicately clinging to the edges of mountainous islands. Scattered amidst the vibrant blues of the sea and lush greens of the mountainside, you'll also spot solitary fishermen huts, known locally as rorbuer, their red hues accentuating the scenery.
Life in Lofoten exudes tranquillity and serenity, as if time itself has been suspended by the sheer magnificence of the islands. Prepare to immerse yourself in the peacefulness that envelops this place, where the rhythm of life slows to a gentle pace, allowing you to truly appreciate the surroundings.
At the heart of the archipelago lies the town of Svolvær, which serves as our base for most of the day. Here, you'll find a delightful array of shops and restaurants, inviting you to explore and acquaint yourself with the town at your own leisure.
To fully experience the mountains, islands, and villages that abound around Svolvær, we have curated a selection of top-notch excursions tailored specifically for Lofoten. Embark on an optional hike to one of the local white-sand beaches, where you can lend a helping hand in a beach clean-up before taking a refreshing swim. And don't fret about choosing between a mountain hike or kayaking—they can both be accomplished during the long summer days, allowing you to relish the best of both the sea and the summit.
Embrace the extraordinary beauty of Lofoten as you embark on these handpicked excursions, discovering the enchanting landscapes, charming villages, and pristine beaches that make this archipelago truly exceptional.
Optional excursions :
Try your hand at authentic sea fishing for haddock, cod, and mackerel aboard a traditional Norwegian fishing boat from 1917, MS Symra

Lofoten is a special, iconic place of towering coastal mountains and small coastal communities. From Svolvær to Reine, you're in for some unforgettable views.
Day 14 - Brønnøysund : Highlights of the Helgeland Coast
Continuing our southward journey, we arrive at the captivating Helgeland Coast, a renowned stretch of the Norwegian coastline adorned with distinctive mountains that have inspired enchanting myths and local folklore for centuries.
Our ship will be stationed in the charming town of Brønnøysund, which boasts a delightful marina and a Neo-gothic stone church dating back to 1870. Take the time to explore the town at your leisure or partake in optional excursions such as kayaking, cycling, or a thrilling RIB cruise, allowing you to experience the beauty of the surroundings in different ways.
A true highlight of this region is the mesmerizing Vega archipelago, comprising approximately 6,500 islands, skerries, and islets. On the island of Gardsøy, you'll find a UNESCO World Heritage Centre that showcases the centuries-old tradition of harvesting highly valued eiderdown from the local eider ducks. The centre provides little huts for the ducks to build their nests, offering a fascinating glimpse into this unique cultural practice.
Continuing our journey from Brønnøysund, we encounter the extraordinary Torghatten Mountain. Its most distinctive feature is the hole that penetrates through its centre, capturing the imagination of all who see it. According to legend, the hole was formed by an arrow shot by a spurned troll at his love interest, while the mountain itself is said to be the petrified hat of a Troll King who attempted to block the arrow.
As an optional excursion, you'll have the opportunity to leisurely hike to the hole in Torghatten, which takes approximately an hour at a comfortable pace. Once you reach the summit, a breathtaking panoramic view awaits you, showcasing the lush trees and scattered islands stretching out before your eyes—a sight well worth the journey.
Immerse yourself in the rich folklore and natural wonders of the Helgeland Coast as we explore Brønnøysund and its surroundings, including the captivating Vega archipelago and the legendary Torghatten Mountain.
Optional excursions :
See Brønnøysund's sights by bus then follow in the footsteps of trolls to a mythologised mountain with a hole right through it.
Cycle through historical Brønnøysund uncovering the town's secrets on the way, from the surprising church to a showroom filled with modern art.
Follow in the footsteps of trolls and Vikings on this excursion to a mythologised mountain with a hole right through it.
Day 15 - Ålesund and Hjørundfjord : Secret of the Sunnmøre Alps
The ship will make a brief stop in the town of Ålesund, known for its Art Nouveau architecture and picturesque position on a peninsula below Mount Aksla. We'll off-load any cargo here as well guests who are joining excursions.
Near to Ålesund, cutting through the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, some 1,700 metres high, is magnificent Hjørundfjord. Its picture-perfect position embedded in the Sunnmøre Alps means it is the area's hidden gem and a secret from most other ships.
Those who do discover Hjørundfjord rank it as a serious contender for their favourite fjord in Norway. Its deep blue waters and verdant mountainsides seem perfectly proportionate and aligned, as if sculpted deliberately by nature's artistry.
On the banks of one of Hjørundfjord's branches is the idyllic village of Sæbø. This is where the ship will pick up guests who had previously left the ship at Ålesund to go on an excursion.
We are fast approaching the last day of our voyage. While bittersweet, what better way to celebrate our Svalbard Express experience than a merry farewell dinner on our last night. It'll also be an opportunity to look back fondly at the many highlights of this journey we've all shared together.
Optional excursions :
Explore Ålesund's remarkable Art Nouveau architecture then taste some of the best small-brewery beer from the local area.
Experience the Norway you've always dreamed of. The dramatic mountains and fjords of the Sunnmøre Alps will make your heart soar!
