HURTIGRUTEN EXPEDITION VOYAGES AROUND GREENLAND
Greenland is home to some of the most dramatic nature in the world. Magnificent natural surroundings form a spectacular backdrop to your voyage.
Greenland is the world's largest island, but is also the country with the lowest population density in the world. It has been inhabited intermittently for at least the last 4,500 years by Arctic peoples who originated from what is now Canada. In the 10th century, Norsemen settled the uninhabited southern area of Greenland and later in the 13th century Inuit people also settled on the island.
The Norsemen disappeared in the late 15th century, but in the early 18th century, Scandinavia and Greenland came back into contact with each other, and Denmark established sovereignty over the island.
Greenland is a very rugged and mountainous land with an enormous ice sheet in the centre of the island, Arctic desert landscapes in the far north contrasted with lush sheep farms in the south with the centres of population hugging the coast, mainly in the south of the island.
Greenland's National Park, situated in the north-eastern corner of the country is the largest national park in the world and yet it is virtually uninhabited by people. It is however, an Arctic paradise for the wildlife that inhabit the area.
Glaciers are a common sight around the coastline of Greenland due to the enormous ice sheet that covers most of the country, although there are only a few places where the glaciers occur immediately adjacent to a town. However, by joining a Hurtigruten expedition voyage, it is possible to see the glaciers up close, especially whilst out on the PolarCirkel boats. You will also get the chance to witness the unique, unspoiled scenery and to observe some of the most exciting wildlife such as giant walruses with powerful tusks and the largest predator of them all, the mighty polar bear.
