The MS Fram in Greenland

12 days / 11 nights

Kangerlussuaq • Reykjavik

VOYAGE FARES 2010 (PDF document will open in new window)

From ancient Viking settlements to the beautiful setting of Evighedsfjorden, this stunning voyage offers a chance to discover something of Greenland's vast array of natural and historic treasures, including polar bears, bird life and some of the country's most breathtaking landscapes, before ending in Iceland.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrive in Kangerlussuaq and embark the MS Fram.

Day 2 : Sail to the beautiful Evighedsfjorden, surrounded by majestic mountains and glaciers.

Day 3 : Call at Nuuk, Greenland's oldest town and its political and social centre. Visit the town and its museum for an insight into the country’s distinctive heritage.

Days 4 - 5 : Majestic scenery awaits you in Southern Greenland, an area rich in Viking history where we hope to visit Qassiarsuk.

This small community is where the Viking Erik the Red settled in 982 after he was exiled from Iceland. Explore the reconstructed longhouse and farm and the church Eriks wife made him build.

Day 6 : Enjoy breathtaking scenery as the MS Fram navigates the dramatic Prins Christian Sund and continues to East Greenland. Very few settlements can be found in this isolated part of the island which is sometimes referred to as the original Greenland.

Days 7 - 9 : The itinerary over the next few days is dependent on local weather and ice conditions, but we plan to visit Skjoldungen Island, offering some of the most spectacular landscapes in Greenland and the remains of an ancient site of the Thule culture; Køge Bugt, where the Ice Cap reaches the sea and large tabular icebergs are calving, and Umivik, where you can follow in the the footsteps of Nansen as he went ashore and started his epic traverse of the Greenland Ice Cap. Ammassalik was the first trading post in East Greenland and until today relies on hunting and fishing to survive.

Day 10 : Cross the Denmark Strait and continue to Iceland's western fjords.

Day 11 : In the morning arrive at Isafjördur, the largest town in the area. Here you will find a music school, a cultural centre and a maritime museum.

Day 12 : Your voyage ends upon arrival in Reykjavik.
