Northern Lights

5 days / 4 nights
or
6 days / 5 nights

UK • Tromsø • Kirkenes • Tromsø • UK

Since humankind first experienced the natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis, their extraordinary beauty has mesmerised all who witness them.

To give yourself the best possible chance of experiencing the Northern Lights, experts recommend spending as long as you can above the Arctic Circle, far away from artificial light.

Hurtigruten's fleet of 11 ships sail through the calm sheltered waters along the Norwegian coast beneath the pitch black sky, the perfect setting to experience the breathtaking Aurora Borealis.

As well as the sights provided by Mother Nature, Hurtigruten also offer an exciting range of winter activities and experiences: visit a snow hotel, lead a team of Husky dogs on an unforgettable dog sledge safari, or speed across the frozen landscape on a snowmobile. Whatever you choose the spectacular winter scenery creates an authentic and stunning back drop to the Arctic adventure of your dreams.

Starting and ending in Tromsø, Arctic Norway's lively capital and perfect winter activity location, your voyage goes beyond traditional cruising, taking you closer to breathtaking environments, fascinating people and spectacular scenery. At this time of year the landscape is covered in white snow and the air is fresh, pure and crisp making winter a special time to explore Norway's remote northern coast. Our ships have been an integral part of Norwegian coastal life for over a century, still operating as working ships, they deliver freight as well as passengers to remote communities along Norway’s coastline.

With a choice of direct flights from London Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh or Belfast to Tromsø, it is even easier to access the wonders of Northern Norway and go in search of the elusive, magnificent Northern Lights.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Tromsø, the Gateway to the Arctic

Fly from the UK to Tromsø, the Gateway to the Arctic, and perhaps enjoy the sights of the famous, compact city before boarding your Hurtigruten ship in the afternoon to begin your voyage north. Keep your eyes peeled to the skies to look for the Northern Lights as you head towards Honningsvåg. (D).

Day 2 : Honningsvåg and the North Cape

Following the scenic sailing through Magerøysund and after an early morning stop at Hammerfest, you arrive in Honningsvåg mid morning. This small port is the gateway to mainland Europe's most northerly point - the North Cape (optional excursion). At 71° 10' 21" N it puts you a mere 2,000 kilometres from the geographic North Pole. This is a wild and windswept headland where the cliffs rise dramatically 300 metres from the sea and you gaze out with nothing but water between you and the frozen North Pole. This evening, you pass Finnkirka, a rock formation that is sacred to the indigenous Sámi people and now the site of an impressive light show. (B, D).

Day 3 : Kirkenes, the voyage turning point

Sailing on, you turn east to reach the sheltered harbour of Kirkenes, only 10km from the Russian border and the turning point for your voyage. At longitude 30° E, you are actually further east than Istanbul and St. Petersburg. This fascinating town allows a tantalising glimpse into life in this remote region of Norway. In Kirkenes you can visit the border with Russia, try your hand at snowmobiling or enjoy a visit to the Snow Hotel. Later in the day you depart Kirkenes returning south towards Tromsø. (B, D).

Day 4 : Hammerfest and Tromsø

Hugging the coastline you revisit remote settlements which rely on the Hurtigruten ships to maintain contact with the rest of Norway, particularly in winter. Hammerfest, the world's most northerly town is your first major port of call where you can enjoy an optional excursion including a visit to Hammerfest's UNESCO World Heritage site, the Meridian Column, commemorating the conclusion of Struve's historical measurement of the globe. Your next major stop will be Tromsø late in the evening where your voyage comes to an end. Transfer to your centrally located hotel for an overnight stay. (B, D ).

Day 5 :

After breakfast in your hotel this morning, a choice of optional excursions is available before transferring back to the airport for your return flight to the UK. (B).

Extend Your Itinerary and Take in More of Tromsø

Extend your stay in this lively and colourful city, surrounded by the dramatic Lyngen Alps. Tromsø has many sights to offer, including Arctic history, architecture, culture and exciting excursions. Try the Aurora Safari with Dinner excursion by cable car, visit a coastal farm and enjoy reindeer sledging or perhaps visit the Polaria centre. An extra day in Tromsø will give you time to enjoy this beautiful city and more time to watch out for the Northern Lights.

Day 5 :

A full day in Tromsø with excursions available. (B)

Day 6 :

Further excursions are available before your flight back to the UK. (B)
