FLÅM
The tiny picturesque fjord village of Flåm is located on the shores of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the famous Sognefjord, and is set amidst stunning scenery. When tourists first came here more than a century ago, they were bought down the steep valley from Myrdal by horse and carriage. Today, visitors travel on the Flåm Mountain Railway - one of Europe's most spectacular train journeys and a masterpiece of engineering.
Beginning in Myrdal, this unique journey is one of Norway's most spectacular attractions. During the 20 km journey the train descends over 860 metres, with a gradient of 1 : 18. This masterpiece of engineering takes in no fewer than 21 hand carved tunnels on the short journey, but in between you'll have fantastic views of the Flåm Valley. One of the world's steepest railways, the hour-long journey provides an unforgettable and captivating experience amongst some of Norway's most majestic and dramatic landscapes.
Many excursions and activities are available from Flåm such as boat trips on the Aurland and Nærøy fjords, kayaking and glacier walking, salmon fishing in the Flåm River, guided walks and hikes along the old trails of the Flåm Valley and the Berkvam Ravine and the stunning Aurland valley, as well as a visit to the exquisite mountain enclave of Undredal, to visit its tiny stave church.
