Voyage Highlights

  • Explore the splendours of the Baltic

  • Travel in the footsteps of the powerful Hanseatic League

  • Visit two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the historical old town of Tallinn and St. Petersburg

  • Immerse yourself in the architectural majesty of the Russian Tsars in St. Petersburg

Itinerary

Day 1 - Oslo, Norway

Welcome to Oslo, the Capital of Norway. On Bygdøy, a short ferry ride from the city centre, you will find the Fram museum, where Nansen's original explorer ship Fram is placed. It's a good idea to pay the museum a visit and acquaint yourself with Oslo's sights before you check in to your comfortable cabin and the voyage begins.

Day 2 - Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen was once a little fishing village of little regard but today it is the modern capital of Denmark. Filled with historic sites and museums, vibrant cafés and excellent shopping, Copenhagen is perfectly in tune with its past and its present. Copenhagen consists of a multitude of areas, each with its own charm, history and distinctive character. Together they make up a dense urban fabric. Though different, the areas have three features in common. The presence of water, parks and bicycle paths.

Day 3 - Baltic Sea

Today is spent sailing through the Baltic Sea. In addition to fish, this sea also provides amber, especially from its southern shores. The countries that line its shores have traditionally produced lumber, wood tar, flax, hemp and furs. All this has provided rich trading since the Roman times. You spend the day sailing towards Helsinki. The expedition team will give you information and lectures in preparation for the next ports of call. Enjoy the view from the spacious observation lounge or take a stroll on the outdoor deck; take a "bicycle ride" in the fitness room with outstanding views or you could even relax in one of the outdoor Jacuzzis.

Day 4 - Helsinki, Finland

With the Russian coastline visible just across the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki has always been in contact with its neighbours, both as friends and enemies. Shipbuilding is a tradition and the fine floating crafts of the Finns were built for both the East and the West. Helsinki is laid out with spacious streets interspersed with many gardens and parks. Architecturally, the city is a mixture of old and modern styles, with the senate house and Suurkirkko (Great Church) representing the older buildings, and the railway station, designed in 1909 by the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, as a notable example of 20th Century architecture.

Days 5 & 6 - St Petersburg, Russia

Though the name has changed several times throughout history, the charm and beauty of this city situated on the river Neva has remained. Gracing the shores of the Baltic, St. Petersburg is a living monument to its founder, Peter the Great. Among the more than 1,000 architectural and historical monuments is the former imperial palace, The Hermitage, which houses the great treasures of the Tsars and is one of the world's largest museums. Culture has always flourished in St. Petersburg due to the influences of Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Pavlova, Nijinsky and Fabergé. Outside the city you may explore Peterhof Palace and gardens (Petrodvorets), built by Peter the Great to resemble the Palace of Versailles. Several optional excursions will enable you to make the most of your time here.

Day 7 - Tallin, Estonia

The capital of Estonia, Tallinn, was once an important port in the Hanseatic League. The Danes, Germans and Russians have all left their mark on Estonia. Tallinn itself fronts a bay on the Gulf of Finland and is dominated by Toompea, a large hill on which it was built in the Middle Ages. The aura of the 14th and 15th Century still remains intact in central Tallinn's medieval streets and picturesque houses. Many of these are beautifully restored and fascinating to explore. But Tallinn is also a modern capital with government buildings and a university.

Days 8 & 9 - Stockholm

Built on 14 islands and an ancient Viking fortress, Stockholm has been dubbed the "Venice of the North". Dotted with parks and squares, the city is medieval and modern, offering some of the finest sights in all of Scandinavia. Enjoy an overnight stay onboard MS Fram whilst in port and take time to acquaint yourself with this lively city.
