HURTIGRUTEN VOYAGE FARES 2012

This new itinerary encompasses a collection of some of Norway and Svalbard's most dazzling highlights. Start with an exploration of Spitsbergen's western coast, before heading towards Bjørnøya. As you arrive at the Norwegian mainland at North Cape, the voyage meanders through a maze of breathtaking fjords, visiting charming fishing villages and coastal settlements as you uncover some of the hidden pearls of this beautiful coastline. The voyage also operates in reverse.

Itinerary - Bergen to Spitsbergen

Day 1 Bergen : The voyage begins in Bergen.

Day 2 Flåm, Nærøyfjord and Gudvangen : Flåm is a one-of-a-kind nature experience. In Nærøyfjorden you will enjoy the steep snow-covered mountains, wild waterfalls and charming landscape with tiny farms.

Day 3 Geirangerfjord and Ålesund : Geirangerfjord is known as the most beautiful fjord in the world. Ålesund is renowned for its charming Art Nouveau architecture.

Day 4 Trondheim : Trondheim was the first capital of Norway. Today it is a centre for knowledge with a highly respected university.

Day 5 Reine and Svolvær : Beautiful Reine is the first place you will visit in Lofoten. After Svolvær you head north towards the narrow Trollfjord and the Vesterålen Islands.

Day 6 Bjarkøy and Tromsø : At the northern side of Bjarkøy you will find the bird cliffs known as Krykkjeberg. Cosmopolitan Tromsø, meanwhile, is known as the Gateway to the Arctic.

Day 7 and 8 Honningsvåg and at sea : Honningsvåg is situated at 70° 58' N on Magerøya. Here you find the well-known North Cape (optional excursion). Later you will head north towards Spitsbergen.

Day 9 Barentsburg and Longyearbyen : In Barentsburg you can enjoy a lively folklore show. After this you continue towards the Norwegian settlement Longyearbyen.

Day 10 Magdalenefjord and Moffen : Magdalenefjord is one of the beautiful fjords in this area that we will aim to visit.

Day 11 Ny-Ålesund : At 78° 55' N, Ny-Ålesund is the world's northernmost year-round community. A number of countries run their own national research stations and there is a lot of activity here in the summer.

Day 12 Longyearbyen : The Spitsbergen Coastal Cruise concludes when you return to Longyearbyen during the morning. It is now time to say goodbye and return home with heads and cameras filled with fantastic memories.

Day 3 Magdalenefjord and Moffen : Entering the North West Spitsbergen National Park you visit Magdalenefjorden and learn a little of its fascinating whaling history, before attempting to cross the 80th parallel to visit Moffen Island and its abundant walrus colony.

Day 4 Ny Ålesund : At the end of the fjord the towering nunataks of the "Three Crowns" pierce the landscapes of the spectacular Kings Glacier, presenting you with a stunning backdrop to your journey towards Ny Ålesund. You pay a visit to this former mining town, now renowned as the northernmost permanently inhabited Arctic Research Station on Earth, before continuing along the coast of Prins Karls Forland this afternoon, heading for Bjørnøya.

Day 5 Bjørnøya (Bear Island) : Today's journey takes you through a region steeped in the myths and legends of the past, where towering cliffs and sea stacks play host to countless numbers of seabirds. Marvel at the spectacular, towering cliffs of this island before heading south towards the Norwegian mainland.

Day 6 Honningsvåg : Honningsvåg is Norway's northernmost town, lying at a latitude of 70° 58' north, and it is from here that you reach mainland Europe's most northerly point, the North Cape (optional excursion), a barren landscape that rises some 300 metres above the icy waters of the Barents Sea.

Day 7 Tromsø : The gateway to the Arctic, Tromsø is a lively, colourful city encircled by ice blue fjords and the dramatic peaks of the Lyngen Alps.

Day 8 Trollfjord and Svolvær : You sail through the spectacular, narrow Raftsund before navigating the entrance to the magnificent Trollfjord - a dramatic world where the cliff walls rise vertically from the dark waters below. Later this evening you arrive in Svolvær, which is the regional centre of the Lofoten Islands.

Day 9 Alstahaug and Vega : Alstahaug is a community of some 7,500 people, spread out across no fewer than 917 islands. The UNESCO protected islands of Vega on the other hand encompass a staggering 6,000 islands, islets and skerries, where eider ducks, lighthouses and remote fishing villages share a dramatic landscape that has seen some form of human habitation for over 1,500 years.

Day 10 Brekstad : Close to Brekstad you find Austrått Manor, one of the oldest manors in the country and the former home of some of Norway's most influential noblemen. Dating from as early as the Viking period it can trace its origins back to the struggles between Viking and Christian settlers during the 10th century. Strategically positioned at the end of the Trondheimsfjord, the area is also home to an impressive German fortification that was built during the Second World War.

Day 11 Ålesund and Geiranger : Surrounded by water, Ålesund is a colourful coastal town renowned for its Art Nouveau architecture. From here you enter the famous Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's longest fjords.

Day 12 Olden, Nordfjord : Sailing into Nordfjord today you can gaze out towards the Jostedalsbreen glacier, before carrying on to enter the Utfjord and Innviksfjord en route to Olden. From here enjoy a rolling panorama of lovely valleys, stretching south and carving a way through mountain slopes that rise some 1,700 metres above the glacier's edge.

Day 13 Bergen : Surrounded by seven mountains and founded in the 11th century, the picturesque city of Bergen is Norway's cultural capital. A stroll through its charming streets gives you an opportunity to discover one of Norway's most vibrant cities and we recommend a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the famous houses of "Bryggen."
